One of the recently discovered materials is silicone. This material derived from silicon, earned its name in early 1940s. Silicon is a chemical element available in nature. It finds wide applications because of its many useful features, most important of which is its capacity to withstand very high temperatures. Perhaps there is no better adhesive for joining of glass to glass than Silicone. That’s why it’s so widely used for making of glass tanks and aquariums. Most decorative items made of glass use silicone adhesive.
Buildings

Because of its capacity to bear extremes of temperatures, silicone is employed for heavy duty bonding in construction industry. Another important application of silicone adhesives is for joining of materials that are exposed to severe elements like sunlight, rain and cold winters. Most conventional sealants and adhesives are unable to bear such severe temperature fluctuations.

Cures

Silicone adhesives are also used as curing agents as these activate the bonding properties of the curing system. An example will be of their being used in radiation curing process, and also for thermosetting processes. Silicone adhesives may also be used at room temperature for vulcanizing applications.

Art

Silicone adhesives are often used for creating pieces of art. This sort of adhesive is just right for joining acrylic to glass and glass to other materials used for making artful items. Silicone is a transparent odorless material and is therefore used wherever a transparent adhesive is needed. However, it needs a special caulking gun.
